Navigating Career Advancement During Social Distancing

By Leticia Lewis and Sophie Luu

In this unprecedented time of COVID-19, making strides in career advancement during social distancing may be more difficult through conventional means such as attending networking events, meeting with your mentor, or taking exams in person. We want to offer some tips and share best practices on approaches that may be helpful.

Suggestions:

  • If you have a mentor or mentee, be in touch online or through phone calls. For online meetings, if possible use a platform that offers video conferencing so you can still see the person to strengthen the relationship. Make adjustments to your schedule to accommodate the new normal during social distancing.

  • Communicate with your mentor or mentee. Be sure to ask your mentor about any stress and time management techniques they could share. Let your mentee explain their situation rather than make assumptions.

  • Many events are now being offered online. Join as many as you can to learn about topics that interest you. Make a list of speakers you like and follow them on social media so you can continue learning from them even after the event is over.

  • Take advantage of training opportunities that are available online - many companies are offering certification and other training programs online that can be taken at your own pace so you can balance learning with your current work, family, and other commitments.

  • Many organizations and scholastic institutions are making articles available online at no cost during this unique time. This is a great opportunity to catch up, do research, and find articles that will help develop new skills and add value to your career.

  • If you are working from home, stay in touch with your colleagues through your organization’s messaging system; join the online learning or other events your organization hosts.

  • If you’re experiencing a respite from work, this is a good time to study for the exam you want to take, update your resume and online presence, or research companies that interest you among others.

  • Stay connected with your family members, friends, and neighbors through phone, video, text messages, or social media. Social distancing can be daunting but when we stay connected with our loved ones and community, we feel less isolated and more supported.

  • Equally important, don’t forget to take care of yourself and do something that you like and that relaxes you.

Social distancing temporarily limits our ability to physically interact with our network and community. However, with a little creativity we can be productive and still work towards our career goals.
